Open Seam is our free weekly community sewing day. We welcome people of all ages and experience levels to come together and spend a day in our light filled studio, working on projects, sharing skills, and connecting with friends. We endeavour to enable our participants in as many ways as possible, with studio mentors ready to help and answer questions, as well as free childcare available to those with young children.
Open Seam is by far the busiest day in the studio, with the hum of machines overshadowed only by the sound of laughter and conversation. At lunchtime all machines are turned off and everyone gathers for a shared lunch; mentors, students and children alike. Sharing a meal offers so many insights into identity and culture, and as such we invite you to bring a plate to share with the group.
Not sure what you'd make if you came to Open Seam? We have small projects and fabric available here in the studio. Haberdashery such as zips and buttons are also available for a small coin donation. If you have never sewn before you will be inducted onto our Domestic straight sewers and overlockers, available for use at no charge.
Open Seam happens every Tuesday between 10am-2pm, so come on down and get involved. Second Stitch is like one big family and we can't wait to meet you!
Open Seam is assisted by volunteers. If you have experience in textiles and would like to spend your Tuesday sharing your knowledge and skills, please send us an email at info@secondstitch.org.au. The more volunteers the merrier!
